I recently got a couple of hard drives to extend the life of my Canon XHA1. I just got a Focus Firestore FS-100 Hard Drive. Whenever I try to record in standard definition (DV) the hard drive records perfectly, however whenever I try to record in HDV mode I cannot get the hard drive to work.

How can I make this hard drive record in HD?

Thanks Smile

From what I can recall the Focus Firestore FS-100 was a good unit, but it was designed some years ago. It is using data transfer technology that by todays standards is a little slow. As you have discovered it will record at standard definition but when you increase the required data transfer rate generated by an HDV recording it can't cope. Basically in HDV mode the camera is generating data so fast that it can't write to the drive fast enough.
Moving forward I would suggest using the drive for standard definition recordings and consider a faster drive when you wish to work in HDV.

Hope this helps you move forward as the difficulty that you have is not one with the camera. Check the cameras manual as they usually highlight a few basic criteria to be aware of when choosing storage media
