Shutter speed comparisons?

I have just purchased a Nikon D40X. Having a slight problem relating shutter speeds I see on the monitor and in the screen with actual fractions of seconds. I get whole numbers on screen i.e. 3, 6,16,400. Can anyone help me with what the conversion is? In the exif data it shows fractions of seconds, i.e., 1/20 1/6 1/400. Have made notes of the settings on screen but they don't seem to tie in with what I see in the exif.
There is nothing in the manual to explain the difference.

Many thanks in advance.

Assuming it's the same as the D200 and other nikons I've had, the shutter speed is shown on camera without the 1/, ie. 30 is 1/30, 2 is 1/2 etc. When you go down to 1 second and slower, it's shown with " to denote seconds, 1", 1.3" etc.

Many thanks for the info. Went out tonight and made list of every photo I took, and it agrees with what you stated. Very happy with results and feel more confident with new camera. Regards. Ken
