So I've never used a sigma 105.. I used to own a Canon 100mm macro and that was OK for portraits too, does anybody use the sigma 105 for portraits what are your thoughts please?

its a lovely lens, excellent DoF for portraits on a full frame sensor, I have not tried it on a cropped sensor other than for its original intended macro

I had both the sigma ex 50 and 105. Both were nice lenses, but the lack of IS made them difficult to use fir hand held macro. I did use the 105 for portraits occasionally, but it’s not my forte. One thing - both lenses developed the same fault with the AF after a short time (this said both lenses were bought “lightly “ used). The issue seemed to be connected with the push/pull mechanism to switch between AF and MF. I suspect that the newer A series lenses don’t have the same issue as their build quality is much improved imho.

The Sigma is a lot of lens for the money ... but ... I tend to find that the Sigma's AF hunts a little more than the Canon in low light. The Canon AF is better in low light.

As has been mentioned the Sigma has IS as well ... the non L Canon doesn't.

Both are optically very good.
