sigma 12-24

10 May 2012 10:19AM
Has anyone got genuine experiences with the latest sigma 12-24 on full frame. I'm thinking of getting one but have read conflicting reports - could this just be as a result of poor QC on Sigma's part? I'd be grateful for any advice before I (maybe) take the plunge.

I have no experience with the 12-24
But I have just got hold of a Sigma 10-20 (not a full frame lens)
Like you, I read conflicting reports.
At 18mm and 20mm it is identical sharpness to my Nikkor 18-55.
But at 18mm and 20mm the Nikkor has much more barrel/pincushion distortion than the Sigma.
The Sigma is perhaps a little soft towards the edges, but this I believe is partly due to the exaggerated perspective at very wide angles.
Hope this helps

What will you be using it on, crop sensor or full frame?

If crop sensor go for the 10-20 (the 10-20, can't really be used on full frame).

I had an old 12-24 and it was a cracking lensGrin Got rid of it to fund 17-40

I have the mk 1 version of the lens (I think the latest is mk2), don't know if there is much difference in optical quality, I'm reasonably pleased with it, if you PM me your email I can send you some full size images (jpeg taken on Nik D3s) straight from the camera at differing f/stops & zoom settings, then you can judge for yourself as you cannot really tell IQ from the smaller images uploaded on the web. (some of my latest uploads here were taken with this lens)
