this is not for me, its going on a 400d for somebody who wants to take portraits

obviously the canon is a top lens, but is the siggi as good as some of the reviews?

the lady is willing to spend the money, but I thought maybe the siggy and some better lighting

I use the Sig 24-70 2.8 as my daily lens. Great for portraits, and general photo's. Sharp, and built well. Is there anyway she could check them out side by side in a camera shop?

I have the canon, so I could take that to compare, but to be honest she needs to learn a lot about photography yet, and thinks by buying a good lens it will make all her pics sharp :-(

Ah, the 'throw money at it' approach. I'm sure you'll direct her in the right direction.

Quote:it's let down by not having HSM focussing

Sigma have just brought / just about to bring out a new version of this lens with HSM. Does cost 800 though.

I.Q. is great,
As long as she's happy to wait for AF to pick up the subject and doesn't mind the racket the AF motor makes, she'll be delighted.
I had the siggy, but sold it on to change to the Canon because of the above.
Slow AF was a real pain in the prevebial.

Does anyone know if the new version of this lens with HSM has improved the autofocus time?

If you were to spend the best part of 800 on the Sigma would you still feel that you were getting value against the Canon L competition?

I had the hsm version before i got my canon ,focus was fast and quite.not as quick as the canon ,but not far off. IQ was excellent, again not as good as the canon .an excellent lens

I would rather pay a bit more for canon's if sigma's is 800.
