sigmas 120-300mm 2.8 is sharper than the sigma 300mm 2.8 prime and competes nice with more expensive primes from other makers.

I agree with Gareth totally, when i was in the market for a long zoom lens I tried 3 different models 1 was the canon 300mm f2.8 prime and as was expected for 5500.00 it was sharp through out the frame, next it was the sigma 300mm f2.8 prime same shot same settings and a soft image, next was the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 and after trying the other 2 I was not holding my breath and actually made my mind up there and then that I was going to buy the canon, anyway I tried the 120-300 and it performed way better than I imagined.
I then asked wex if I could use there computer to see the 3 images of each lens model and I zoomed into 100% of each image, I was stunned to see the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 was on par IQ wise to the canon prime.
I changed my mind there and then and brought the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 and never looked back.

I use this lens with a 1.4 and 2x converter on it and both work very well indeed. the 2x converter needs good light though in my opinion for it to work it's best.

We have the dg ex version of the 300 2.8 and it is excellent....use Nikon however, so can't compare with Canon... newer lenses will generally outperform older version - yes I know that is not always the case necessarily.... As above the 120-300 dg is also a great piece of glass
