Why don't you read some reviews and make a decision yourself based on what you're intending to photograph. If you intend doing close-up photography then a macro lens is clearly the better choice.

Are you going to be making gallery-sized prints..... or just small images for the web/social media/email?

If the latter you'll find any decent camera, even a good compact, will do the job.

How you take the image (e.g. RAW) and how you process is more than half the battle these days, rather than camera make and model.

I have bought and sold camera bodies and lenses, without hesitation, over the years. I have never allowed myself to be locked into a particular system or format. I've had DSLRs and Mirrorless. Full-frame, APS-C and M4/3. And in between times used a variety of fixed-zoom compacts.

I buy as cheaply as possible so that I can resell with limited loss. If this means buying grey imports or "nearly new" so be it.

One's needs change and so does the way we take and share photos.

Right now I am in-between "systems" and am using a compact at the top of the price range - but I didn't pay the 4-figure sum it normally costs! Is it as good as a full-frame DSLR or Mirrorless? Of course not but is it good enough - including for occasionally publication in local (glossy) print media. Yes, absolutely.

Start with the end product and work backwards. Smile

I'm not sure I understand. Why do you need to buy another camera if you're getting your current one repaired?

It probably costs a bomb to get the camera repaired. Perhaps Ian is weighing up the possibilities?
