I now have the manual for the new Lumix DMC FZ30. I've been reading up on it, the same Leica DC Vario Elmarit 35 to 420mm equiv. lens, F2.8 throughout the range. Minimum macro range 50mm. 8 Mega Pixel sensor, 4:3/3:2/16:9 format. Raw/Tiff/Jpg files, manual focus ring, manual zoom ring. Things are realy moving forward, don't know about the 16:9 format (seems bl***y silly to me). All they need to do now is to make the same camera with a linked optical viewfinder with rangefinder instead of the electronic viewfinder and they will be there. But perhaps that's in the future (about 2-3years, after they've sold a lot of FZ30's).

Which aspect ratio gives 8 MP images? Probably 4:3, with the others being cropped (a la APS style)?

I hope it's smaller than the Lumix I handled the other day (it's a mates), it seemed almost as big as my D70. What's the point in that?

Sounds like quite an interesting spec and camera Ellis? Do you have the camera too or just the manual?

Sillyconguru,
I think you are right about the 8MP images. It may be big physically but compare what you have to have with you in separate lenses, 35/70mm + 70/200mm + 200/400mm + the body, I wouldn't want to carry that on my bike (don't think it would do the equipment or my legs any good).

Anthony,
No, only the manual. It seems that some of our American friends may have had a delivery. They all seem pleased with it, but why is the manual on the UK website?

Bernie,
The site is still there, I got rather annoyed with a certain person and almost left this site. Constructive criticism is one thing but abuse I will not take.

I carry on backpack on bike;

18-50
55-200
100-400
tubes
50mm prime
Bottles of water.
dSLR

Well I carry to much body weight so I might as well Carry the camera.

That is 28mm to 640mm Eff.

To equal your kit I guess a Minolta D7D and sigma 75-300 and 28-80 lens would give pretty well the same zoom range and IS.

He-he, I don't mind what I carry on my bike (well, within reason)... The one I use most has an engine Smile

I take your point though.

You need a wide screen camera so that you can get postcard prints at the chemist Smile

Like the DSLR guys and gals do......

I read on another group that the FZ30 is just a huge elaborate con and there is no such camera Smile
They couldn't find the report on the Argentine Pana website

Looks like it's a reality. The detail manual can be downloaded from

FZ30

Just fill in "FZ30" to search for the download file.
I'll be in line to get one when it becomes available.

nikon5700ite,
"You need a wide screen camera so that you can get postcard prints at the chemist Smile"

But you can crop the 4:3 image to 3:2 which is what camera is doing. All you have to do is take the length in pixels divide by 3 and multipy by two to get the width. You can then adjust the crop up or down for the best image, which is what the camera will probably not do.

I've checked through and cannot find the offending post, it must have been on another website. It's on there again now.
