I'm sure this must have been covered before but can anyone PLEASE recommend any programs/downloads to stop the increasing numbers of pop up ads when online

You could try using Firefox as your internet browser. It has pop up blocker and an ad blocking facility (so you can block all ads that originate from certain websites from appearing).

Plus it's free!

If you don't want to use Firefox you could install the Google toolbar, that also has popup blocking.

I never use IE without the Google toolbar - both for the pop-up blocking and for the search engine itself. Highly recommended.

But then I rarely use Internet Explorer - Firefox is so much better. So if you're so inclined, give it a go - it's definitely worth a try.

I'm with you Mark but unfortunately I haven't succeeded in convincing them at work yet. :0(

I know what you mean, Ian.

Fortunately I'm friendly with the IT chaps at work, so they don't mind me having Firefox on my work PC. I know I'm lucky in that respect.

My dad felt a little guilty for installing it on his work laptop, until he found out that his company is actively considering switching entirely to Firefox!

I am an IT guy at work, but we have strict policies in place and all the other staff would start screaming if they even got a sniff of me using something they couldn't. :0)

I agree about Firefox, but for some reason it doesnt work with certain sites, eg EPZ's shop will not display products, also my credit card company MINT requires pop-ups and if u block them you can not access the account. That's my experience anyway

Not sure what you are doing, but it works fine with Firefox for me. If you download the extesion ieview, if a page doesn't like Firefox, just right click, view this page in ie, and it'll take you there.

Either look in your bookmarks or go to tools>extensions>get more extensions.

If you are staying with IE, i highly recomment Popup Cop (www.popupcop.com), i've been using it for years now and its probably the best pop up stopper i've found. It also blocks loads of other annoying things like automatic window resizing, etc.

If you are using Windows XP, try downloading service pack 2.

This gives you greater improved security features as well as the option to allow/block pop-ups when you visit sites that use them.

I find this SP2 release very beneficial.
