I'm thinking about getting myself a tele-converter to go with my 300mm f/2.8 lens. One of these -

Will be mainly used for photographs of small birds etc... I'm not sure which one to get, maybe the 1.7x one? Any advice?

Don't discount the Kenko Pro DX 300 range

Looking around the web it looks like the Nikon 1.7x one is the way forward. Not reading great reviews about the Kenko one compared to the Nikon one. I think I would pay the extra for the Nikon.

Until recently my friend has been using the Nikon 300mm 2.8VR (current model) with both of these convertors.

Optically the 1.4 and 1.7 are very close, you really can't see any difference image quality wise but you do loose 1.5 stops with the 1.7 as opposed to the 1.4 which only costs you a stop. AF seems unaffected when using this setup on a D3, we have been off photographing birds such as red kite, peregrine falcons and puffins in flight, have done the falcons hunting etc.. lots of good fast action stuff and the convertors do not seem to have hindered his AF. His hit rate is pretty similar to mine using longer lenses such as the 500f4 and no convertors..

He has just gotten the 400mm so has sold the 300 but is continuing to use both the convertors with the new lens with great results.

Thanks, good info. I'm temped with the 1.7x converter I think. Only looking to get one at the moment, I think that one would be more useful?

My advice is get both 1.4e and 1.7e - which gets you either 420mm or 510mm effective with a 300 f2.8.

Yes that would be nice, but I can only stretch to one of these at the moment. I think the 1.7x would be more useful, but I'm not sure Smile

I use the 1.7 and can recommend it, the extra reach is worth the extra money!
