The Taylor Wessing Prize - Photographic Portrait competition

The Taylor Wessing Prize is a prestigious photographic portrait competition run each year by the National Portrait Gallery in London
The first prize is £15,000
About 50 photos get hung in an exhibition afterwards
I entered some of my Shoreditch street portraits this year for the first time. There were 4,467 entries in all.
I was disappointed but not surprised to not even get through the first round. Fair enough.
However, 2 days ago I received an email from them announcing the 3 shortlisted entries. I'm not sure what is so great about 2 of the 3 ... but I'm sure the judges do.
But the 3rd one, 2 shots of a woman in her garden with her laundry just baffles me.
I just Googled the definition of the word "Portrait". There are several responses but this one seems to sum it up for me:
"A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expressions are predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person."
Well take a look at the shortlist, especially the 2 photos I'm referring to. Maybe you can explain it to me ...

Quote:Never ever be surprised Colin as to how your photos are judged, sometimes you just have to wonder if the judges are even from the same planet or at least have an understanding of the theme of the competition.
Kind regards,
Adrian.E.Mortimer.
Thanks Adrian
And my complaint certainly isn't about their judgement of my photos. That's fine.
Just wish I understood why they considered the laundry photos worthy of such merit.
Colin 😊
