Thinking of upgrading to EOS 20D

I have a Nikon coolpix 8700, which is a good camera but I find it very slow, and near useless for my sons football photography. What do you all think of the Canon EOS 20D Which im thinking of getting.

Come on CB where are you. On paper your choice sounds good. I would suggest getting it with a zoom in the 50 to 200 range for youth football. Oh and the faster the lens the better. I would advise paying more for a fast lens than IS for your choice of photography, but each to their own view.

What about the new 350D, that's quite a bit cheaper.

By coincidence I have recently upgraded from the 8700 to a 20D with no regrets. I have found that the 20D needs more post shot image processing in computer(from RAW) than the 8700 does( from fine jpeg, as NEF is far to slow to record!), but ultimately as with any DSLR the final result is potentially far superior. The beauty of the 20D is the speed and the buffer. I find it hard not to take too many shots at once! I use it for occasions when I feel the "need for speed" (most of the time) and the 8700 is my light weight backup for holiday snaps and a walk around camera for landscapes. I would certainly consider the new 350 though.
I hope this helps!

the glass is the most important thing..

Definitely if I was looking to upgrade now I would be seriously considering the 350D over the 20D if it turns out to be what is promised. It has almost all of the features of the 20D but a better, lower noise sensor. I would definitely hang on for a while as prices of the 20D must surely drop once the 350D comes out which I think isn't meant to be all that far off. March or May I think?

Considering moving on from my 300D but when I look at what the other cameras offer I think I might be inclined to keep it and improve on the lens. Like the idea of a 70-200 F2.8 zoom but me thinks the cost may be considerably more than the camera and my marriage!

I have a Sigma 28-300 which is fine for the use I put it to. I use the boxed zoom more.

I fancy the Canon 17-85 IS USM. Pricey but seems to be a good lens. Any one out there using one?

I use a 20D and find it an excellent camera and although not used for football photography I have used it to capture flying bird with good results, and as mentioned above the new 350D looks like it could be well worth considering too, and you choice in lens to go with the camera could also determine which body you look at depending on your budget, as edd say the glass is important.

just had a look, the 350 is very small so dont think i'd like holding it. I'm tempted by the 300D looking at the spec and the price so thanks for suggesting it Edd.
Could I still get A3 prints from the 300D ?

Shane, from what I can tell the 300D and the 350D are both in the same casing, just a different colour...take a look here for some side by side photos:

I can't find the link right now but it has a 300D and 350D next to each other, the 350D indeed being smaller, if I find it i'll come back and post it.

I've found it!!!!!

click on the photo of them both together

Hope this helps

edit: The grip looks a little small for me having taken a couple of shots with a colleagues 300D I doubt I'd want something smaller (I'm looking for a second body!)

Ooops, well spotted! Yes, they both were the 350D. Thanks for the link - the side by side photo shows the difference well - I didn't realise it was quite so much!
