I had a little reminder on my lap top the other day from Microsoft saying that Windows 7 will pass on after January next year, so its now time to think about upgrading the system.

I currently have a Compaq running windows 7 on an SSD drive with 4gb of ram, which works fine apart from the fan bearing making a noise. After 12 years I think that's allowed!

I quite fancy the HP pavilion with the SSD, as I'll be upgrading to the latest version of photoshop, does anyone have a recommendations, my bydget is around £500 for the laptop

You have no need to change the laptop because windows 7 support is ending.

If you do want to change, not have to, I would stay away from HP personally.

As long as it's working there is no need to upgrade, it's simply out of support.
However if you do and are looking at what others are using;

For the last year I've been using a Lenova Yoga 520 with 128Gb SSD.
The screen 13" is adequate for my purposes with 1920/1080 resolution.

Installed Software;
Windows 10
Serif Affinity
Luminar 2018
Adobe Elements
MS Office
Chrome
Kaspersky Security

This lot uses ~36Gb leaving ~82Gb usable : plenty of space to load files for editing before moving to external drives for storage.
