I just snagged a nice Nikon Coolscan IV from the Oxfam online shop and, of course my shiny new laptop won't run the venerable Nikon Scan 4 software Which I used back in the day. there are two what I will laughingly call the modern alternatives, Siverfast and VueScan. From a brief play bath are arcane, obtuse and old fashioned, but one must be the better bet, right? So does anyone in the EPZ world have a view.

Vuescan will run pretty much any scanner, while I believe Silverfast may be scanner-specific? Buy Vuescan Pro and it will be upgraded for life at no additional cost, which is refreshing compared to most other photo software.

I can't speak for Silverfast, but I use Vuescan and much prefer it to the Nikon software. It also runs my Canon flatbed.

Thanks for your thoughts. Interestingly Silverfast 9 just dropped and has a slightly less old fashioned UI which also includes a dark mode, so I’ve put my money down for that.

Vuescan, is neither 'arcane, obtuse and old fashioned' as you say. I Use VUESCAN quite a lot and find it Very Very Good.
Try it before you Knock it for six. Scans are Excellent with it and you can Manipulate the settings to your hearts content..
HAPPY NEW YEAR.
