Weekly Black and White Challenge ending 8pm Wednesday 29th April 2020 - Motivated Light

New Challenge and this week I decided that the theme would be "Motivated Light". The idea being that the light source is also in the shot. The advantage here is that it leaves the subject open and is easily done at home. Trying to come up with themes that don't require going outside and breaking social distancing is a challenge in itself and I don't want to go all Trumpesque and encourage you all to do that.
I did have another idea but staying home would have made it more difficult so that one stays in the back of mind for another time.
1. The challenge is just for fun.
2. All images must be taken after the theme is announced.
3. All images must be uploaded by 8pm on Wednesday
4. All uploads must be B&W (or sepia toned)
5. Only one upload per member
6. The person who hosts is the judge for that week challenge and the judge’s decision is final
7. The winner gets to create, run and judge the challenge for the following week
8. Try not to get more flare than you already do in your images
9. Have fun

Not often a plan works....
I had an idea for a shot and pretty much got it.
Out for my daily walk but in a different direction.
The bench in question looks over Teesmouth and generally I encounter someone sat there.
However - not now, especially at 8:30am.
The small car park for access to the beach at this point is closed and locked off - so only really people who live in south part of Seaton Carew will venture this way. Open countryside about 0.5ml from our house and a mile or so over the deserted golf course and didn't see a sole.

As it has phissed down with rain all day and is forecast to do the same tomorrow, I decided not to take a chance on Wednesday being better, so disappeared into my basement man cave/studio/ female-free-zone and met myself in front of the camera.
Unlike Dave, I was pleased that there was someone there, otherwise the image would have been impossible.
I decided to take advantage of the fact that Mr. Selfie is in charge of the challenge this week, so no competition on that score.

Well, I'm in.
I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure I've interpreted the brief correctly - apologies Eddie if that's the case.
But if Eddie does disqualify me, que sera! I had a play around with something new and different for me, had a lot of fun in the process, got to smell blown out candles (there's something quite delightful about that, isn't there?!) and produced some images that I really like anyway. So I'm a winner whatever happens (in my world, anyway!)

Okay back with a decision and as last time I decided to leave a little comment for each one, I have done the same here. Never in the same league as Malc though who remains the master.
Rob - Very nice starburst effect and patterns from the leaves. Interesting to have a palm tree in your garden. I'd be tempted to get a sandpit and a coconut and pretend I'm on holiday.
Dave- Another nice starburst effect and the bench makes for an interesting subject. Cool shadows and it could make a nice postcard.
Malc - Nice go at a selfie. I can see your comment on the photo was in jest and I wouldn't have put it quite like that. I have been looking at some of the LED panels on the Amazon site and do want to get one or two. An Australian photographer called Richard Tatti uses them to light scenery in his milky way images and I would like to try that.
Phil - Interesting idea and always good to have a willing model. I'm not so lucky, my wife hates having her photo taken so maybe that's why I've been forced to upload my likeness on a number of occasions to compensate.
Chris - An interesting take on the theme and I like the lamp. I bet that gives interesting shadows and I think it looks very "homely".
Linda - No disqualification necessary, that fits in with the brief and the light source can be the subject. The crystal glass also gives some interesting shadows.
IL (All Hail) - I've seen some lights similar to that demonstrated on youtube and they do look interesting. It does give some nice lighting on the Robot doggie toy.
Well now it is decision time and a hard one it is too. This reminds me that occasionally I do flip through the Black and White Challenge gallery and I often think that the gallery as a whole stands up all on it's own in quality (discounting mine of course
) and there are seven more here.
So after much thought as I am typing and flipping back and forth between the images I have decided to go with "Crystal lit" by Linda. A nice simple idea and a great result.
So many thanks to everyone for taking part this week and giving me a hard time (I wouldn't have it any other way) and see you all in the next one.
