What's up, WhatsApp?

I've been trying to download WhatsApp Messenger to my android 'phone (from the Google Playstore) and when I hit "Install" I keep getting the message "Waiting for wifi.....", implying there's no wifi connection, and that I need to use my mobile data for the download which could incur a charge. There's nothing wrong with my wifi/phone connection.
I spoke to my service provider tech support and the 'technician' hadn't even heard of my 'phone (Lenovo a1010: OK, so it's old skool) so he was no use.
Anyone any thoughts?
