What to pack for South Africa trip?

2 Apr 2019 8:35AM

We are going on a short tour of South Africa, basically around Cape Town, Garden Route and Johannesburg ending with a three day stay on a private game reserve called Kariega. As a disabled photographer I have to take care not to pack too much kit so I'm struggling with what to pack from my available kit. I have an E-M1 mk2, Pen-F, 7-14 pro, 12-40 pro, 12-100 pro, 40-150 pro + 1.4 converter and a Panasonic 100-400. For the Pen-F I have a 14-150 and 17mm lens.

My initial thoughts are to keep weight down and get best image quality I will take the E-M1 mk2, 12-100 and 40-150 + converter. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I'd lose the 40-150 in preference of the 100-400mm. This gives you a more expansive focal length range with no duplication. It also significantly gives more reach in terms of tele performance - something you'll need when at the game reserve.

Thanks Sherlob, I think that's the way I'll be going,

Although you will get pretty close to the animals at the reserve, the longer the lens (imho)

Ps. Pack a pair of tweezers in case you get bitten by ticks!!! (Personal experience!) 😁😁😁

I agree with the long lens for the animals with the wider end to give you some background and context.
The PEN-F and lenses will be ideal for Cape Town. It is a fantastic city but you may want to be discrete carrying expensive camera equipment around.

Steve - as far as wildlife goes, have a look at rontear's pf , you'll find loads of images from Africa and can see what lenses he has used. Might give you a good idea on what to use.

Thanks folks, your help is greatly appreciated.

We are going in a small organised group so I hope they will tell us where to avoid when we venture out alone but I will take the Pen-F out with me. I've also had a look at Ron Lears portfolio and it's amazing, certainly got some good ideas from his work.

Thanks again
