Where they have gone...

I am a member here since 2011, I have lost my MOJO on several occasions, but I have tried to come back everytime...
I have lost many virtual friends here over the years, a few of them have even changed their user name, so I am not sure who they are...
I haven't seen many famous members here for a past few months, as a photographer whose works I truly adore...
Can anybody has a clue where they have gone, or may be their art is defeated by the sake of their daily life...
I can name a few like Mile, Janet, cssury or the like...if anyone is personally known to them, your little effort to bring them back here would be an encouragement for others as a photographer like me...

Some just don't bother coming on here any more. EPZ is nowadays mainly a "reviews and competitions" site rather than a "forum and gallery" site. It started to change direction a few years ago when its founder Pete Bargh left the management team.

But I'm still here after 18 years!

Still a newbie to me

I guess many people used the site as a leg up for their chosen hobby, and while some have dropped out, others have gone on to make it something more. Many of the friends I have made on here from the early years don't visit any more.
Social media has changed the world in the last 20 years, and so while I don't see many of the oldies on here any more, lots of them (for example Cheryl Surry "csurry") post photos regularly on Facebook or Instagram.
As far as the late night drunken chats on the forum, there are probably many reasons why that doesn't happen any more as life and work gets in the way.

It's interesting to reflect on how the site has changed over the years. I am not sure how much of the change is due to the adoption of a new strategic or editorial direction (post Pete's retirement). Rather, I recall the numbers of regular users has been gradually dwindling year on year for as long as I have been a member. I reckon most of this is down to the plethora of alternative social media platforms that exist for photography. Ultimately, many people want there work to be seen by as broad an audience as possible - epz just doesn't enable this and many of us don't have time to manage a presence on multiple social media outlets. I certainly believe this is the reason I spend less time in the gallery on epz than I used to.

The gallery is still one of our most-used areas.
We didn’t ‘change direction’ - we simply had to concentrate on content and areas that would help us commercially keep the site running and fundamentally free to use, in a changing photographic climate and surge of social sites.

I will always prefer a dedicated subject site over the various SoMe options available, as there is a sense of community here (and on other dedicated sites) that is totally missing on SoMe.
Plus, the 'one-stop' experience with one site offering such a wide span of topics within the genre instead of having to visit multiple sites.
You can compare it to a department store or supermarket compared to individual high street shops all specialising on one thing.

I was once told at work that when you leave it's like pulling your finger out of a bucket of water, it's simple fills in the space.
I'd say the same here.
Poster come and go, some more frequently than others, but as long as photography exists as a hobby and someone has the commitment to run it (thank you all) the site will move along.

There are a lot of members that used to be quite active (and opinionated) in the forums, and they are missed.
However, occasionally I do see an upload or a comment by them.
Thee was a time a number of years ago when I didn't visit the site too often. I was still taking pioctures though which has been useful tgis past year as it's meant I could find something to upload during lockdown.
I think there ae many and varied reasons why people become less active or inactive on here.
I agree there are many different options availabe now. When epz first started I went to a few meet-ups with fellow members. It was quite a new thing then before the explosion in social media to be able to mobilise members who were dispersed across te country and beyond. It happens on a much smaller sale now but members do meet up here and there.
There's also the age thing, and by that I mean some may be less active than they were, both physically and photographically. Someone who was in their 50s or 60s at the start of epz would be in their 70s or 80s now and may not want to participate much. Well done for those who do.
Others I guess just move on as they find their own niche.
I have to admit that there are members names that I've forgotten and when they do get mentioned I do wonder what they're up to now.
But it's good to see quite a few new members too.

I did that as well

Particularly the Christmas / New Year period visit to The British Wildlife Centre in Surrey.
I kept in touch with a few that I met on " epz meets " when they decided to go elsewhere but that has, sadly, also now stopped
