I have looked extensively on this site and others and now I need some help. I have narrowed it down to the Giottos MT9270 tripod and MH7302-720 head or the Manfrott 055 pro xb and 804 rc2 head. I shoot landscapes and I think these will serve me well . Any one had good or bad experiences with either ?

Well pleased user of Manfrotto 055XPROB lovely and solid and a bonus with the XPROB version is the centre column, after slackening the clamp a little, can be slid all the way up then rotated to run to and fro in the horizontal plane - and tightened up again. (No actual removal required).
Thence means that with the legs splayed out nearly flat, the camera can be held mere inches from the ground..

Also use the Manfrotto 486RC2 large ball-head (having a quick-release plate) - again a class act...very solid once locked up...

Don't know specifically what the 804RC2 is like..

Another vote for the Manfrotto! I have become a complete tripod convert since buying mine a year or so back - I really don't like shooting with out it.

Can I also add a vote for the Manfrotto 349 clamp.

I find this a very useful piece of kit. Just slide the centre column out of the tripod and into the clamp and it will clamp to branches, seats, window ledges etc. I particularly find it useful in bird hides or where the legs spread of a tripod can be a bit of a nuisance.

Very solid and dependable.
