WiFi in the garden

Sitting on the raised patio at the bottom of my garden I am unable to get a stable signal from the broadband router which is located in the house in the understair cupboard. The router is however in direct line of sight with the patio, albeit 70-80 feet away.

Has anyone solved this issue? Is there a cordless, battery powered signal booster which could help?

I have mobile broadband but the fiver a month I pay for my mobile phone service only gives a tiny allowance, quickly eaten up if you watch video etc.

All suggestions, especially for equipment, appreciated. Smile

So he just needs to run a power cable down the garden ?

You could:

- for a start, take the router out of the cupboard

- get a mobile deal with more data

- connect to a neighbour's wifi Wink

If you have a shed or something down there, running power to it might be a good idea. In my garden office, I ran a CAT6 cable from the router to the office, where there is a 16 port switch and another router for any devices that need to connect via wifi.

Taking it out of the cupboard would certainly be a start. If you don't have power to the garden, is there somewhere else in the house you could plug in a WiFi range extender that would give you the coverage boost you need? Eg, back bedroom (you might find height helps)?

No, the Wifi doesn't reach down there - just get closer or a better line if possible.

I just want something which (wirelessly) picks up the the router signal and amplifies it a bit so that I can get a connection in the garden. I don't want anything which needs to be physically attached to the router.

I guess it doesn't have to be battery powered. It could be plugged into a socket in the kitchen. One of my kitchen windows looks out directly onto the area where I need the signal but about 55 feet away.

Does such a device exist? If not I'll look at other options. Thanks for the replies so far. Smile

Such a thing does exist, like the one themak has shown above. I use a similar device and can access our WiFi in the garden. It boosts the WiFi signal without changing the access code. Before buying, it would be worth checking what the prospective purchase says it extends the range by.
But moving the router from the under stairs cupboard would perhaps be worth a try.

I so want to say something about putting another rooter in the garden.....

But more seriously, a mesh system might be the answer

The router works perfectly within the house - I get the same (expected) speed in every room. So it's really only the garden that's the issue and obviously only sporadically, even at this time of year.

For various reasons I don't want to move the router - including that it seems to be in an ideal spot for indoor use, as I've indicated above.

But I didn't have a clue even what to look for and the responses here have pointed me in a direction, so that's been very helpful. 🙂👍

I live in a flat (second floor) and also wanted internet in the garden. I ended up buying a TP Link Wi Fi Extender. Because the signal has to travel through several walls in my home and the flat opposite. I ended up just plugging in an extension lead and running it from the window into the garden, a minor inconvenience, but worth it for the internet connection and plugging the wi fi extender into that. Although it was about 100+ ft from my flat to the extender and I was 100 feet or so from that, I got a signal ok. Not as quick as indoor broadband speed but plenty useable. The extender wasn't expensive, about £20-£25 from memory. I tried a model up from that one too and it was actually worse. So I returned it and just used the cheaper one. I forget which company it is, but one of the main wi fi extender makers do an app for your phone to test the speed, connection, reliability, etc when experimenting with the optimum wi-fi position.

Here are a couple of possibilities. They look like they simply plug into any wall socket with no physical connection to the router - am I reading this right?

With a short extension lead I could actually get the device onto a window sill in direct line with the patio at the bottom of the garden.

You are reading it right. As I remember, pressing the wps button on the router and the extender is all that's needed for them to find each other.

In similar situations, I use my phone as a modem Wink
