Windows 10 and photo editing problems

Would anyone know if Windows 10 updates could cause problems with both my Canon editing software and my Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 software. Last couple of weeks has seen the Canon software which I use to edit my raw images consistently jump randomly into full zoom when opening up an image and the crop tool either not working on command or taking several attempts at me resetting to free mode etc. Its so frustrating, it was working fine a couple of weeks ago. Today my photoshop elements 9 text tool is playing up, underscoring with a line which actually doesn't appear when I commit the layer. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Yes and No...

Affinity hasn't, or seems not to have been affected in any way.

Luminar 4 on the other hand - on opening multiple images for single edit the zoom sometimes jumps and the software can hang. I suspect it's the application of the graphics chips and available resources. A simple solution has been to open single images rather than multiples.

I have a Lenovo Yoga520 with 4Gb RAM which I think is the real issue when system resources are in use.

Thanks for that Dave. I never open up multiple images always view just single ones. I have quite a large amount of memory on the "C" drive and not sure how the graphics chips work. Initially, I thought it might be because the "C" drive was running quite low but after releasing a huge amount of storage the problem still remains.

I find Windows updates continually cause me problems. I now have my computer set to limited download so that Windows has to ask my permission before updating - which is fine for the future but doesn't solve your immediate problem. I would suggest that you try an uninstall of your photoshop and Canon software completely and do a reinstall of both. If they instal lafter the Windows update both softwares will probably solve any problems themselves when installing.

Have you updated Elements and your Canon software?

Thank you Tianshi and Bornstupix2. The software hasn't been updated recently but was all running Ok up until about a week or so ago.

You really need to check to see when the last windows update was. The other thing you should check is if all your drivers are up to date. You can do this by going to Windows System>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers>Device Manager. When I do this I open the Device Manager and go through all the 'devices' which come into effect when you are editing photos such as Computer, display, Firmware, software, and check that there is not an updated driver for them.

I have had problems in the past with Windows updates being too far ahead of the camera or editing software I was using..Whilst manufacturers are keen to specify the versatility of their software it doesn`t always follow that Windows will play ball. I know that many makers software leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to updates but the speed and tenacity of the industry is now such that it is often easier to update than to leave it and hope that Windows will accommodate you. Based on my belief that a few makers changes are usually easier to deal with rather than a Windows inspired melt down.....sorry to so cynical!

I know that you get on well enough with Luminar, Dave but in my experience it's been almost completely useless and reading various fora, I'm far from the only one that thinks that.
I originally used its trial version but there was no way that I'd pay money for it which is a shame because if it was to work properly, it's got considerable potential.
In fact, I've got a serial number here, given to me by a mate who did pay for it and was that unimpressed that he gave it away.
I'd like to reinstall it and have another go but I fear I'll just be inviting another load of grief.

How do you manage that?
It's always been my understanding that Windows 10 updates were unavoidable.
In fact, tampering with their application is probably the cause of most peoples' woes.

It's more than highly unlikely that they'll be anything but.

First of all Jester we have had this conversation many times. Windows has a setting which is for those with a limited amount of download size. For them to do an enormous download to your computer when it is going to cost you, the receiver, a lot of money would not only be bad business but would probably cost them customers. Not everyone lives in area of superfast and super megabits of availability. there is therefore a setting in Windows where they send you a message when there is an urgent update and you give them permission when to do it.

I frequently find drivers which have not been updated - maybe because of my settings, I don't know. What I do know is that one of the difficulties for software companies is that no two computers are set up exactly the same so the software has to accomodate at least the majority and preferably everyone.

I might add that last year a young girl near to me came over to my house whilst I was away at a wedding for one night to look after the dog. Her use of my television cost me an extra £20 because I have a limited amount available to me.

Perhaps but I'm still none the wiser re. how you avoid updates that are automatic and compulsory for everyone else.
I can only assume that you have a metered connection.

Deliberately not installing updates is a recipe for disaster and would explain why your drivers aren't current.
It also probably explains why you have so many other problems with your machine.

Machines may be set up differently with regard to software and hardware but I don't think you can do much to the OS, which is where these updates are applied.

Yes I have a metered connection - as I said we don't all live in an area where superfast broadband is easily available. And you are quite wrong about the updates being inevitable. I update as and when I have not had to update other software or have watched something on iPlayer.

Not wrong at all.
You're only able to avoid taking updates (as I've said, a bad idea, which is quite possibly causing you problems) because of your metered connection.
For everyone with a "normal" connection, updates are automatic and unavoidable.
The best you, or rather we, can do is to defer them for a while; I don't know how long, I've never seen the point in doing so but eventually, they will instal themselves.
Actually, it is possible to sidestep their automatic arrival but it involves more than merely pressing a button.
