You're worrying too much Ken.

I migrated from XP and it was easy enough.

Just disregard all the undeserved bad press and use it in its Windows 7 guise to begin with. You can experiment with the tiles at your leisure.

Seriously, I purchased our Dan a new laptop last year with W8
A couple of clicks and he was using it as W7, as he preferred to do

It took them a long time to really improve on XP, but W7 did that & W8 is only a wee extension of W7

I too went from Windows XP to Windows 8.1 and found it very easy and so much faster.
I found a useful website www.makeuseof.com where you can download pdf books on many subjects for free. The link below is for a pretty decent starter guide to Windows 8 and may be of use for you to give it a read.
