Windows Problem

Used my laptop yesterday with no problems everything as normal. I switched it on today and at first got a message saying something about windows as it was loading. Oh, it's maybe updating, I thought. Eventually it loaded but my usual screen picture was replaced with a windows one and task bar and icons were somewhat different and the browser was now Microsoft edge. On exploring further I found that all the folders containing my pictures, videos, documents, music etc were all empty. I do have some backup but not of recent things some of which are precious, so I am rather annoyed. When windows has automatically updated before it's changed a few things but nothing has ever been deleted.

I shall be grateful if anyone can advise me of what I need to do. I haven't changed anything at all on the laptop myself. I daren't. Do I need to get in touch with Microsoft to complain? Is there a way of reverting back to how things were yesterday and get all my files back? Thanks in advance for any assistance. The system is Windows 10.

You could try WIndows restore to take the computer back to before the update was installed. Then backup your photos and reinstall the update.

I have heard of this problem before somewhere but i cannot remember the proper fix for it..

Thank you for responding, Umberto. I've checked the update history and the computer hasn't had a Windows update recently but there's one available to download - it says - which is odd. It also says restore not available because the last windows update was more than ten days ago. The only thing that's been updated recently (23 July) is a driver from the Realtek Semiconductor Corp - whatever that is. I'll do a bit more investigation.

Yipee! Problem solved and have all my files back. I contacted Microsoft and a technician talked me through various things but no joy. Eventually he gave me the number to phone for assistance in the UK . Anyway, I daren't do anything but thought maybe before I phone I'll switch the laptop off then back on again. Couldn't believe it when the screen was back to normal and all my files are there again. All I can think is that it hadn't completed the update. Any, all is well now so I'll back it all up again. Pleased you've got your files back, one back up isn't really enough, you need at least 3 and ideally keep one off site if you can.

I got the windows update and i had to close and open a couple of times before i could even open any programmes. Just one of those things, but i get this feeling of dread every time i see Windows Update.

Sounds as though on bootup Windows encountered a problem and went into safe mode. A reboot normally solves it.

Yes, maybe something like that happened, Sausage. I too dread Windows updates because sometimes my display is changed, the default browser is changed to MS Edge and that awful Cortana is activated. I'll take Chris's advice and backup onto a second portable hard drive and investigate cloud storage too. I may not be so lucky next time. Thank you all for your responses. Best wishes. Grin
