OK peeps listen up. I've secured Maeve's house again for the long weekend of Friday 25 - Monday 28th March. This is the weekend the time changes, same as last year, when it seemed to work quite well. Please register your interest ASAP as I want to secure the second (and maybe third) house.
What's it all about? For newcomers here's the rundown. Doolin is a beautiful fishing village on the West coast of Ireland. It has a thriving semi-Bohemian tourist economy and is renowned for its traditional music. It can be unbearbly packed in the summer but end of March is a nice time, not too heaving but by no means dead.
Doolin is on the edge of the Burren, a majestic limestone plateau region which stretches about 20 miles inland in a lunar-like landscape, and slopes down to the sea at Doolin. It is also under the shadow of the majestic cliffs of Moher, extending for five miles and about 400 feet of a sheer drop at their highest.
The accommodation: we use a holiday house at very good rates with a view of the cliffs, and last year secured another house literally a few yards away. We also have the option of the other half of the semi to make it three if the interest is there. For those who prefer their own arrangements, there's a very good B+B a couple of hundred yards along the road. Doolin is awash with all types of accommodation from hotel to hostel.
The houses are a three minute stagger from the magnificent O'Connor's bar, with live trad folk music every night, and great bar food till 9.30 each evening. There are two other pubs and two hotel bars within walking distance, so at least one pubcrawl is on the cards..
The meet will be in its 5th year. Numbers went from 4 to 9 to 15 then down to 12 last year. Hopefully there'sll be a few more this year
Cost the last couple of years has been kept down to about €50 per person for the three nights. Haven't agreed the price yet but shouldn't be too far off this.
Father Ted?? for the last 2 years we incorporated a visit to the original Father Ted house, followed by a few pints in the pub in nearby Ennistymon where the crew based during much of the filming, and hs some lovely mermorabilia. Note that you don't have to be a Father Ted fan to enjoy the meet, it's just an added extra, but could you resist a chance to kick Bishop Ganto up the a**e in front of that house????
So, come on, please let's have some names ASAP so I can get the second house booked if we're (hopefully) going to need it. Go on, go on, go on, you will you will, you will, you will...
Oh by the way, the thread for a mixture of useful information and inane banter is here
