Goodness knows why I have a 1971 Irish halfpenny on a bookshelf but it seemed a suitable subject. The intriguing design with the bird biting its own leg was by Gabriel Hayes inspired by illustrations in Collectio canonum Hibernensis, an 8th century Irish manuscript held by Cologne cathedral. She also designed the decimal Irish penny and two-penny coins with exotic birds. The world-wide web is an amazing resource!!
