Magnification

By chase
I tried my hand at a few Vanitas images, something I have wanted to have a go at for ages.I started with a very cluttered table and gradually reduced the number of 'things'. This is about half way through the session so be prepared Wink

Lit by minimal daylight camera left and the candle. I really wanted the darkness here.

An HDR image, 3 frames each 2 stops apart, combined in Lightroom, finished in Photofaffshop with a straighten up crop and a few tweaks.

My favourite bit has to be the effect from the magnifying glass, quite effective...I thought Wink

Thanks for dropping by

A very nice collection, which work well together, I actually like the smoke spiral from the candle, by design ?

Thanks guys.
Steve, I had lots of trouble with that candle, it's not straight and kept falling over, I must have blown it out and relit it a dozen times, hence the smoke Sad almost cloned it out as it was only on one of the 3 frames but, it was there so I included it.

Loads of things and loads of interest, Janet!! Great title and I do like the magnified effect on the books, as well as the tiny bit through the glasses. The candlelight is gorgeous, catching the tip of the skulll and creating a small shadow on the edge of the red book; then there's the reflected light in the watch face....I can go on and on and can't stop looking at it, bewitched!!!

Lovely composition Janet, though I might have been tempted to have the magnifying glass over a different part of the image, I like the whole composition, but then find I'm looking for the magnifying glass from the title and I feel that pulls my eyes too far to the left of the main image. I also feel that the magnification should be of something more symbolic that the books, perhaps the die on a six or the small watch? I also find the magnifying glass too light. Really interesting image, it's made me look at lots of similar images on line. Smile
Stay safe.

I don't know if it is deliberate, but I do like the repeated circles, from the magnifying glass, to the clock and watches, the round spectacles and the round end of the key.

A wonderful collection of items and the magnifying glass adds an unusual and very effective addition to the image. Glad you kept the candle in the image as the lighting would have looked strange had you cloned it out.
Looking forward to the rest of the series Janet

Couldn't think of another Norm.
I did struggle a little with the position of the magnifying glass in this image, over towards the dice compromised the clock, in the middle, too obvious.
I didn't lighten the glass, that is just about as was with the light from my window.
I shuffled this composition around that many times I went dizzy Wink

Fab. I love the clock hands which look to me too long for the face?Smile Can't quite work out what the thing is far right Blush. What about snapping the candle and having it shorter? Looking forward to more of these.xxx

Fiona, the bit far right is a piece of barbed wire, never thought of snapping the candle..doh Blush I ended up with a shorter, fatter pillar candle as I was fed up with this one falling over !

My goodness you have quite the collection of objects. One especially spooky. I too love your magnifying glass. I want to pick it up and inspect everything up close. Really well assembled image. Love the darkness too.
