11: a moment of stillness

By rosie42
a moment of stillness
the apparition of a face
among the crowd

This series of images is inspired by Haiku - the tiny poems of Japan, traditionally written in seventeen syllables.

Haiku usually gain their effect by suggestion, presenting a clear-cut picture which serves as a starting point for trains of thought and emotion. But because these poems are short, they rarely try to give the picture in detail - the rest the reader must fill in.

In recent years, there has been an enthusiastic and expanding interest in Haiku-in-English. This genre springs from the Japanese form but rarely consists of seventeen syllables. What it does seek to retain is the brevity, clarity, immediacy and resonance of Japanese Haiku and, like a photographic image, to record and share a moment of seeing...

01: strangers
02: curl
03: been there
04: dissatisfied
05: the silence of books
06: one farmer and me
07: the last embrace
08: shallows
09: before the guests
10: retreats to the sea
12: in between
13: suspended

Know why I love this series????
Because the quality of the photographs doesn't even enter into the discussion.... these are pure communication in its simplest sense.... I love them,, all of them... an idea, a simple idea and then executed perfectly.... love them Susie.

I was attracted to this shot by the off kilter composition, - and Im glad I stopped by. This is really nice idea to base a series around an abstract concept, and works very well in this context.

Not sure I buy into the Haiku, but the image I do like because of its style and dynamic structure. It's as musch Cartier-Bresson's decisive moment for me as anything else, but then perhaps uit all amounts to a similar thing. The capture of a fleeting moment. Nicely done.
