Sadder with each image.

How on earth did you manage so many great shots at such a young age, I wonder?

More inspiring photojournalism, Bob. Each one has captured the essence of lives blighted by a multitude of curve-balls. The legs of the sleeping person and the rubbish strewn in the road add to the hopelessness.

Thank you for the compliment! I cannot put my finger on any one thing, but as far back as I can remember (I'm now 71) I've always been interested in photography, especially the 'human interest' side of it. But I think what really sparked my interest in photojournalism was a subscription to "Life" magazine which certainly in the '60s was a superb source for mining examples of the genre, and studying the work and style of the likes of Garry Winogrand, Edward Weston, Don McCullin, Andreas Feininger, and too many others to mention here. Of course, I could never hope to emulate any of them but they have helped me to understand what goes in to making a great image.

The legs are stealing the scene, like a bit part player upstaging Hamlet.

A splendid addition to this series Bob. Not having much time for epz at the moment but this has to have a belated UA from me.

Thanks for the response, Bob.

Clearly, you had good exemplars to inspire you. And maybe, also, there's an occasional thing that means that once in a while, you outperform your usual level. A subject inspires you: certainly, this series is inspired. I'm a few years younger than you, and I remain impressed, deeply, that you made so many excellent images of a challenging subject, at the age of 20 or 21...

Inspiration found in a magazine, perhaps, but you still had to get out there and take these very moving images yourself, finding the situations, showing understanding what makes a great composition, showing empathy with the camera you had...
