1970: Canyon City

By KingBee
In this short collection I shall be putting up a variety of images, mainly people-based, a very few of which some of you may have seen before today; so apologies for that, but, as with my London uploads, I am including these images as part of a theme reflecting life in the US, mainly New York, at the end of the '60s, one of the most influential decades of our time. A year on, things really weren't much different: people looked the same, dressed the same, and drove the same cars.

So, let's think about 1970 within an American context, just for a moment: seven years had passed since JFK was assassinated (Seven years? What's that? I've been retired for ten and it seems like only yesterday that I was clearing out my office!); Nixon was president; the war in Vietnam was in full swing; Americans had put the first human beings on the moon only a year earlier; the world's first commercial Boeing 747 passenger service, on Pan Am, took off from New York for London in the January; and 9/11 was 31 years in the future. For those of you who had not even been born, these facts will hopefully provide a useful cultural frame of reference. As for me, I was 21 years of age, a mere slip of a lad .......

We begin with this view of 5th Avenue in Manhattan. St Patrick's Cathedral can just be picked out on the left edge of the frame. Must have been a Sunday, because there's no traffic (that is, pedestrians ruled). Not much else to say, really, other than that I have put in a new sky: the original was completely washed out.

Huge thanks to all who voted and commented on "Whitehall" yesterday, especially to Leo, Sandy, Carol, Alan, Lin and Ollie for their much-treasured UAs.

Ignoring the 'normal' clothing and the bicycles, there's a very futuristic, almost Blade Runner look to the buildings, caused by the processing and that heavy, brooding sky you have added.

Well I went to NY in the 80s but it was heaving by then. This shot looks as if it might have been shot in lockdown, there's so few people about, and no traffic. I never knew that was a Sunday thing.
