Just tootling along in the Solent, with Isle of Wight in the background...captured on a fishing trip, yesterday.

Would be nice to be tootling along in that on days like these. Nice little shot, but would be better on the eye if the sea horizon could have been level. I know that this would put the boat at an angle slightly but it would not have mattered as boats do rise and dip.

Hello Martin, you've been on the site a long time but I cannot recall you uploading to the Critique Gallery before - so welcome, and I hope you'll find it useful. This is a learning area, we concentrate on camera technique and image processing.

You've told us a bit about the circumstances, it would be good to know what this says to you, whether it captures the occasion. There's a lot that I like (I'm a Southampton girl originally, I know that stretch of water... )

The first thing that jumps out - as Lynne says above, it tilts, and that's something that water never does. Taken from another boat, the tilt was inevitable but it does need to be corrected. If you had your own boat visible in the foreground, preferably with another sailor, a tilt can give a real live-action feel. But here, the shot could have been taken from the land... I've uploaded a modification, rotated to level the water line, with the resulting white triangles left in and a narrow black frame, to show the extent of rotation needed.

Another time, why not try photographing the other end of your boat, focusing on boat rather than background, and compare the effect of a tilt with this one.

I also made a few other adjustments. It looks to be a mobile phone shot, the circumstances were tricky with light bouncing off the water, the device coped well. The main thing that I did was to open this in Photoshop's Camera Raw filter and push the Dehaze slider a way to the right. This has improved the sky although it has introduced a bit of colour noise. I also added a bit of contrast and brightness, and tweaked slightly in Levels to boost darker tones.

Please let us know if this is the sort of feedback you are looking for.

You are after feedback and this is a reasonable record but you MUST get the horizon straight. This seems a regular with mobile phones which cannot be held as a proper camera and thus regularly 'tilt'. Water is always level.

As above, - the all important horizon. Easily sorted in post processing if not at the time of the shot.

The mod has glare reduced, and white balance closer to sunny than as shot.

Ive also applied some sharpening. There are many apps for the phone that can do a nice job in post processing.

Re holding the phone like a camera, - you can in fact hold many types quite like a camera that doesn't have a viewfinder, and use the volume buttons as shutter release. The iPhone works like this, and Im sure may others.

It can be tricky to get horizons straight in a boat, in any case: making editing necessary. It's entirely possible to edit on a mobile, though the result may lack precision, so that levelling the horizon requires careful fingerwork: Snapseed is a very popular and powerful app on both Android and iPhone.

Thanks all...I will endeavour to sort out the horizon...
