Shortly after I moved here I took this picture of Queen Elizabeth, Empress of the Seas and P&O's ??? leaving Southampton all at the same time.. There are often 3 or 4 cruise ships alongside in Southampton - there's space for 7 or 8.

The zig zag route is because the channel comes SE down the Southampton Water into The Solent. It then turns SW to go round the Bramble Bank - a sand bank in the middle of The Solent, which dries out on big tides, before turning E out to the English Channel. The cruise ships are sufficiently manouverable to negotiate the channel without assistance, but many cargo ships need help from a tug to negotiate the sharp corners. The Southampton Harbour Master is kept busy escorting the shipping through this narrow and busy section.

The ferry on the RHS is the Red Funnel ferry that runs from Cowes to Southampton.

Thanks for looking.
