3 of a Kind

By Philo
I wanted to capture 3 flowers in an image but I couldn't find a natural composition that worked. I therefore shot 3 individual flowers, isolated the heads and put them on a black background. I wasn't sure whether it would work any better if I left the larger flower sharp and progressively blurred out the other 2.
Settings for larger flower f/3.3, 1/30s, ISO 80 (maybe should have upped the ISO?)
Any comments, advice or mods welcome. Many thanks again to those that took the time to offer their thoughts on yesterday's upload.

Love the simplicity of this, beautiful. The mod I created goes to the opposite extreme, just for fun.

Like this - good idea and well executed. Leave it alone.

Its good as is, and the idea is a good one.

Couple of suggestions:

Dont use the dominant colour from the main shot as a border element; increase the size of the black canvas for a better composition; flip horizontally so it "reads" left to right, top to bottom; use a large plain frame to accentuate, as in the mod.

Lynns mod is also a good idea, but a completely different look, so you could have two prints from this. You could also selectively change the hue of individual flowers for a multi coloured look.

I like the fact that the three flowers are different, you went to a lot of trouble to get them for this manipulation. I just feel it needs a bit of finesse, but am not sure what, if I get some inspiration, I'll do a mod. I also feel the flowers are a bit tight in the frame, but they are all a lovely colour and nice and sharp. I know it's a minor point, but be aware where the light is falling on each flower and try to position them so that the direction is uniform.

Thanks Pamela, I did consider light direction and tried rotating individual flowers but I kept tying myself in knots. The tightness was obviously deliberate but Willie has nicely corrected me with his mod. I look forward to your "finesse" mod.

I really like this image. I could quite easily see it on my front room wall. Some excellent mods that have been offered aswell. Great idea, really works well. Smile
