A 3 week old Southern African White Rhino. His northern kin are set for extinction - the last male having died last year. Whilst born in the relative security of a wildlife reserve, his future is by no means certain. Poachers will still target him in order to cut out and sell his horn (when developed). The game reserve will likely try to reduce the risk by cutting off is horn periodically (think of it as akin to a finger nail and you'll not be too far out in terms of its make-up and rate of growth), and injecting it with poison (not harmful to him, but potentially lethal to those who ingest the rhino horn). Fences and armed wardens are all well and good, but the poachers often use helicopters to access the parks and the wardens are spread too thin. Sometimes I despair of humankind: we live as though we have a greater right to this world than anything else alive.
