8” tall Western Screech owl.

This is pure luck! I had my head lamp on to check watering in the back yard, saw these yellow eyes staring at me from the Apricot Thevitia shrub/tree. I ran into the house, adjusted settings hurriedly, and back to the tree. I could not believe it was still there. I got off 2 shots before he fled. Only because I was wearing that head lamp was I able to zero in on him in the dark!!!!

Those eyes are remarkable, how lucky you were!

Lucky is right! You could not plan this. I have watched small owls flit around the street light for years, sat in my car hoping to see what one looked like but they are so fast and elusive that I never got to see one close enough to see clearly. The activity, of course, was always late at night, only when large beetles and bugs were available. If I had not been wearing my bright head lamp, I would not have seen it or been able to get the camera to focus.
