Well done Barbara - they're not easy to capture because they don't stop moving. I've binned all the ones I took in my local park Sad

You will know I like my little details, and it is the first thing I look for in an image Barbara.Well, the first detail I see is the excellent texture in the tree bark at the bottom right hand corner. It would appear this is where your point of focus falls, and not on the bird.Still a nice image tho'

Thanks everyone. I have read up what bokeh means / lens blur , thanks pascalg . I also realise that the focus was a little out but this small bird was way above my head and I heard it before I saw it. As it was tapping the bark with its beak so I waited for it to look up.

Smile They are fast little blighters aren't they!

(I have trouble switching to single point focus and locking on to the head fast enough to catch them)

Great shot, as Bev says quite rightly they are so bloomin fast, you need cameras everywhere.
Its exciting though isn't it when you actually get a shot.

If it helps, when doing bird photography, lock your focus point in the centre, focus on the eye, re compose your picture and shoot. Also, match the shooting speed to the focal length, in your case you should have had the speed set to at least 300 sec for a focal length of 300mm. (you don't say what speed you used). I notice you used an ISO of 800 and this suggests to me that the light conditions were not ideal. Considering the circumstances, you did very well, but I have made this comment with the intention of trying to help you with future shots, as the method I have described works best for me (when lighting conditions allow).
Regards,
Geoff.

This is extremely attractive, as the combination of movement and very slightly unsuccessful focusing has created the effect of a painting rather than a photograph.
We can just hope for some better light - that lasts a bit longer, too!

I find it always so helpful to read comments on other images. I saw your pic and thought it is an excellent bird shot, and it is! But as it seems you could have done better - say the experts. We'll try and learn, won't we?

I'd be proud enough to call this one mine!
