A Clean Tongue

By brian1208
This is a first for me - this hoverfly was busy having a good clean up when it turned its head toward me. I managed to get the shot from underneath the head showing the large tip of the retracted tongue.

I haven't been able to ID the particular species, so any help would be appreciated. (I'll put the original up in the mods to help with the ID)

I was pleased with the detail as this is a crop of about 20% of full frame

Nice macro work Brian, this has maintained good detail despite the large crop.

PS it looks like Scaeva Pyrastri or possibly S. selenitica, they are quite similar.

Thanks for your positive comments, I do appreciate them.

Terry - thanks for the ID assistance, its not Pyrastri as that has white banding where this has yellow.

I've gone into another site and found what I think it is: Syrphus torvus, thanks Terry, your suggestion of selinitica led me there
