A Fly's Eye

By brian1208
I'm still exploring the limits of my new 100 f2.8 LIS macro using AI focus rather than the manual "Rocking Focus" method.

This shot was taken using f4.5 with ISO400 for 1/400th sec hand-held.

I was able to watch the eyes of this fly popping in and out of focus as the AI servo kept pace with my movement and I think that the result is more accurately focused and sharper than I could get using the traditional method.

The image is cropped to about 40% of the original as I wanted to use natural light rather than macro flash so had to be further away the normal (I estimate about 2ft)

It really is a quite remarkable lens and Canon have done a super job of matching it to the 7D

Aaaaaargh! This is what I aspire to. I've just checked out the price on this amazing new lens and I'm going to have to save up! Superb shot.

thanks both. Lyyne I traded various bits of kit so that, + some birthday money meant the lens "Only cost me 50" . Have a look in your bits and pieces of kit - it suprising what you can find to trade! Wink

(I almost feel its cheating using this lens - until now my macros were always shot manually using techniques acquired after many years of struggle)

Excellent, just been reading your thread about your lens, I will get one sometime, I have the 7D and the Tamron 90 which is fine for now but with IS it makes life a lot easier, keep up the good work,

Definitely can't fault the results. Superb, and the focus is perfect.

thanks for the extra comments.

John, I learnt my macro craft using manual lenses and its still needed to get the approach to the subject etc but this lens does transform the actual shot taking. I reckon its increased my keeper rate by a factor of 4!
