A Good Drying Day

By whatriveristhis
I posted this some time ago as part of a triptych, but I've always had a soft spot for it so I thought I'd give it a solo flight.

Thanks for a great response to my last image, and to Mike, Oliver, Dave, Peter, Joline, Merlin, Marie, Robert, Somnath, Jenn, Eric, Alfie, and Michal, who liked it enough to leave an award, my extra special Thanks.

Letting it all hang out?
I love washing lines. People's secret lives on display...

Excellent mono composition, Alan. That line of washing really adds to the image and gives something for the eye to rest on.

It seems the farmers wife is always busy washing dirty clothes, I rarely pass a farm where the line is empty, except when it's raining, farmers have sense for the weather and their wives do too.

We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line,
Have you any dirty washing, mother dear?
We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line,
‘Cause the washing day is here.

Looks like the food bowl for the moo-cows need refilling...

Cows well fed naturally - no sign of mess around the feeding station.
Washing done - all's well with the world.

Benny Hill went to the same boys' grammar school as Bill, though a little earlier in its history.
He was expelled. Something to do with taking a milk-float without consent, also taking a student from the girls' grammar without consent...
The story mutated into Ernie .

I have always enjoyed washing day. My grandmother taught me the art of properly hanging out the wash. The underwear had to be hidden behind the sheetsSmile

Top of the class exposure control combines with brilliant choice of POV are only two of this image's strong points. Bravo.

He was expelled. I think he was about 14 or 15 at the time. Part of Southampton folklore, but only sketchily recorded.

There was a chemist/photographer shop at Portswood where I had a Saturday job as a lad. The owner's son, who also went to Bill's grammar school, was thrown out of the Boy Scouts for getting his biology badge with a Girl Guide whilst at annual camp...
What was it about that school, I wonder?

I like the inclusion of the incidental foreground while all the detail and main centre of interest is at the top of the frame. An unusual composition but one that works very well.

Phil.
