A hard life

By mrswoolybill
I know that's not the inscription, but I keep reading it as hard life.
Thanks for looking,

I wonder what death could be described as.
3 Sep 2020 7:39AM
I too read it that way at first.

What was that old joke...
"Death is Nature's way of telling you to slow down."
I dream that this would be Hard Lee true...! 👀😂😆😂👀

Interesting shot Moira. I think the harsh black and white suits the inevitability of the story of this image. The leaning headstones add something too.

The strange thing is once you see something like that, you always do. I sure back then is was a hard life.

Great image.

Well seen and photographed Moira.

hard life, yes ... hopefully whoever lies there had an easy death to compensate for it
and an excellent image, too, love these textures and skies

A great follow up, Moira. I like the inclusion of the shaded stone on the left, it puts us in the place of the photographer peeping into the past.
And a hard life, no doubt it was for the likes of Richard Lee.

It certainly was a hard life by today's standards, but they just got on with it, their normal.

I read the gravestone as 'Richard Lee', then after reading your write-up, quoting 'I keep reading it as hard life', on looking again, I too now read it as 'hard life' 😃👍

You go for pathos, and you get jokes.

Truly a hard life...

It was a HARD LIFE....It would have to read out in unquoted Small capitals, in a voice that sounds like two slabs
of granite being rubbed together...Tʜᴇʀᴇ's ɴᴏ ᴊᴜsᴛɪᴄᴇ, ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ's ᴊᴜsᴛ ᴍᴇ. (T.P) Smile

Elizabeth and Martha had a hard life too. But their all resting now.

The close-up and low perspective of the tilted gravestones give a sombre atmosphere to this mono image.

A wonderful image beautifully captured and presented. I was struck by the results of time, pollution and probably acid-rain on the headstone. I wasn't able to read the dates but hopefully that is not a 193? (am I imagining something like 1896 to 193?) as it suggests the local lungs must have endured a really hard life.

George, the burials are mainly 18th and 19th Century, the problem isn't acid rain but salt, the cemetery is on a very exposed headland above the North Sea.
Thanks everyone.
