Thank you for the wonderful response to yesterdays lion upload .... Also a big thank you to the following for their UA's...Peter (Ddolfelin), Ryan (Bigry), Maureen (HarrietH), Kathryn (Kathrynlouise), Billy (Williamsloan) and lastly Netta (Netta123)....all so much appreciated.
We watched the lioness move away shortly after they rested. Scarface was quick to follow her, followed closely behind by his friend. Scarface stopped for a drink of water and warily kept an eye on his friends whereabouts. He then had to hurry to catch up to the lioness. This time I was ready for the action with camera resting on a beanbag for support.
For lions there is no fixed breeding season. The mating period begins when the female comes in oestrus. During the mating season the lion is a devoted mate. During this time little attention is paid to food and other animals that pose a threat. The mating couple seperates from the other lions and spens a five day "honeymoon" in secluded spots. (Thats why it was so strange for his friend to hang around following then) Copulation which occurs every 20-30 minutes takes place quickly with lots of growling. In the height of passion the male nips the female on the neck. The breeding time is a romantic experience . Upon dismount the female will often take a swipe at the male as he flinches away. This behaviour is attributed to the fact that the male has a barb at the end of his p***s that hurts the female on exit. This barb apparently helps stimulate the female to ovulate. as the mating ritual continues she will produce eggs.
Sometimes however the lioness will mate with several different sets of males in a short period, thus lowering the chances of infanticide.
