A Milbert's Tortoiseshell (Aglais milberti) (best viewed large)

Indigenous to the east coast of the US.
The are four sub species of Tortoiseshell butterflies, found around the world.
They are very swift, powerful flyers.
They feed on sap, rotting fruit, animal dung, as well as taking nectar from flowers.
They have a wingspan of 1.75 - 2.45".
Belonging to the Brush Footed butterfly family, they use their two front legs for tasting food, and their two pairs of rear legs for propulsion.
The Milbert's sub species is flying from April - October with 3 generations occurring during that period.
