A Mouthful of Mouse

By IamDora

What could be sillier than a duck eating a mouse? Actually, it was quite gory.

(If you're squeamish, don't look at the variations.)

I never in my life saw this before and had no idea in spite of the years I farmed that a duck will catch, kill and eat mice.

THE VARIATION: VIEWER DISGRESSION ADVISED

V1 the catch
V2 the kill
V3 the Prize
V4 the meal.

I thought they only ate insects, veg and fruit scrapes and their duck food.

Well, lesson learned. IT won't be doing that anymore.
Amazing. It must have been a thrill to capture it. The things I learn on EPZ

I'm amazed. Those beaks don't really look dangerous either do they? Amazing photo and it's given me an idea for one I might post soon on unexpected animal behaviour.

In V2, when she killed it, it was like its head was in a vice. Before that she gave it an amazing shake - so hard and fast my one shot at it was totally blurred, That seemed to daze him and he just sat there while she crunched down on his head.

I found this so surprising that I did some Googling and, sure enough, muscovy ducks do eat mice. Apparently they are great for pest control.

Also great for insect control - they love mosquitos and mosquito larvae. After a rain they are up to their eye balls slurping in the puddles.
Well that was a surprise! Well captured Dora.

With the mouse's eyes open in one of the versions, it looks like it was being eaten alive.....what a sequence, Dora! Who woulda thunk it?

You are a great observer.

Actually the duck got it head-first into its mouth and shock it so hard it was just a blur. Then she dropped it and chomped down on its head. At that point the other ducks were moving in so she grabbed it up and ran around with it - with me chasing her along with the other ducks.
