A new hope?

By sherlob
The birth of every Rhino - in this case a Southern White Male (3 weeks) - is a cause for celebration. Yet, it should also be cause for concern: how as a race can we minimise our threat? Whilst poaching remains the most commonly considered threat, we need also to continued impact of hunting and our insatiable desire to develop wealth and land (aka: spoil). The simple truth is: whilst this exceptionally cute new born rhino gives us some hope for his dwindling species, he will remain at significant threat for his whole life. He will likely need to have his horns, once grown, repeatedly cut off and what horn is left will likely be inject with a poison as a deterrent to poachers - although this will unlikely deter some who would kill him just for the little that remains (poisoned or not - it will sell, and why should they care if the end user is poisoned by their ‘product’?) Without access to managed land he will starve. I could go on. I can offer no answers, but by sharing this picture I hope I can raise awareness.

Great image to advertise the plight these creatures are in. Unfortunately your sentiments not only refer to Rhino as we all know , Elephant, Orang Utan and many more will soon be in the same situation.

I agree Harry - the list is astonishingly and very depressingly long.

I share your frustration Adam.
Education and awareness is all good though I hope it won't be too late.
