Firstly I think that you have picked the right place to capture some interesting images. Sourounder by history by the looks of it, so good choice.
You have not supplied any information regarding the setting you have used for capturing this image so its hard to tell what you may have done diffrently to improve on it.
I would first consider the white balance setting you have used to capture the original shot. Picking the correct temperature setting will help when converting your original image to black & white.

I would also consider the composition as you have captured a lot of foreground, to show the shadows and the light coming down on the walkway, however in doing so you have cut the top of the lamp post off. So working on the composition of the shot would help.
