A One Sided Conversation?

By AlanBW
Have not been about much for a little while, so it is catch-up time again. There are loads of great shots that I have missed during my absence, but I will do my best to visit people's portfolios over the next week. It might have to be click and run, so my apoologies in advance if that is the case.

The above image was captured at the predominantly red-bricked Trakai Castle, which is situated on Lake Galve in Lithuania, not far from Vilnius. Trakai was the ancient capital of Lithuania - the castle has been restored and is now a major attraction for visitors from all over the world.

It was a grey, wet day when Tricia and I visited Trakai, but the rain eased off when we were in the castle grounds, only to return with a vengeance as we were making our way across the wooden bridge to the shore of the lake at the end of our visit.

I observed the young couple above from right across the castle courtyard and felt that there was the possibility of an interesting shot. Although I could not hear the conversation, it was clear that he was doing most of the talking and he was also gesturing with his hands in a bullish, confident fashion. She was obviously rather ill at ease with what was being said, as demonstrated by her body language. Occasionally she said a few words without even looking at him, while he continued to talk 'at' her rather than 'to' her. I don't know if his chat-up lines were becoming stale, but she certainly wasn't succumbing to his charm! Just a few seconds after the above image was captured, he leaned in towards her with an expression that could best be described as a wolfish leer, whereupon she leapt to her feet, yelled something short and sharp and flounced off, leaving him wearing a totally different expression - one that that suggested, 'What have I said?'

I wanted to capture her flounce and his incredulous expression, but at that moment a large party of tourists arrived and stood right in the way, so the chance was lost forever.

Later that afternoon we caught a distant glimpse of the couple back by the shore of the lake, when the positions were reversed. They were a considerable way along the shoreline and nobody was anywhere near them. She appeared to be sounding forth with great gusto, shaking her finger at him aggressively and on at least one occasion stamping her foot, while he stood with slumped shoulders looking at the ground and displaying all the demeanour of a scolded child. I guess that they made up sooner or later and probably had a lot of enjoyment in doing so.

A nicely captured study of body language speaking volumes. The setting works well, too, with the arch framing him and kind of emphasising that he is the one speaking.

You see...THAT's what happens when you flirt with the waitress, you silly boy. And doooooon't tell me you weren't aware. Smiling at the waitress and saying, "My, aren't these chips a shiny yellow!" IS flirting.

Hope he's learned his lesson.

Firstly, Alan, the background is so interesting... the arch, brickwork and enormous stones in the wall, lovely colours and textures.
As to the couple, he has a little smirk on his face, making light of whatever he has said or done, and the girl has a very large frown, and also seems on the verge of tears. Great body language captured here, too.
