A picnic in the country - 1936

By HobbitDave
Thanks very much for the comments and votes on my Down on the Farm old car photo yesterday, very glad you liked it.
It motivated me to put one more up, this one also restored in iPad Photo Editor.
Taken in 1936, not sure where, possibly The Lake District, a proper family picnic by the roadside, in the days of no motorways and minimal hgvs. They have all the gear to make it a memorable event, blankets, hampers, and food-kit from 85 years ago. Perhaps a grannys birthday, or even mothers day.
Not sure what the car is, its very similar to a grey 1939 Mercedes 190VA I bought for 15 from a uni student in the early 1960s! Mine was pretty tatty but m.o.td, and always fell out of 3rd gear 🙂 this car looks very smart and shiny.

Thanks for looking, hope you enjoy. Stay safe 🦋

Great shot . . . wonderful how many folks can get into a car when you don't have to worry about seat belts. Including the photographer this shot suggests at least 6.

Memories. Grandfather had a car, we were doing the same in the 1950s. Rugs, hampers, thermos flask, collar & tie & frocks of course.

A well to do family to be able to afford a car like that!...super restoration 😁

I used to have a mini that jumped out of gear...but at least I could reach down the back of the engine and refit the coupling... when the engine had cooked down!!!! 😁😁😁

This was wackier than that, Jeff, it was a very long floor-mounted gear stick. I made a large lead weight and a string, and threaded it through a hole in the metal dashboard. Tied one end to the gear stick. It kept it from slipping out of 3rd gear about 90% of the time. Not advisable in this day and age 🙂 but in the early 60s it was useable ⚙️🔨🙂

They all seem to be enjoying themselves. Simple pleasures. Like the lady in the photo. My mum had a fur collar that you attached to various outfits. I used to use it when I dressed up as a wee girl.
Hope you are keeping well and looking after the lovely Winston.
