A Postman Butterfly (Heliconius melpomene) (best viewed large)

By gconant
Indigenous to Central and South America.
Like all Heliconian butterflies, they have the ability to use saliva to turn pollen into a liquid, which can then be taken through their proboscises.
Because pollen is very nutritious and high in protein, it allows the Postmen and Longwings to live and breed for several months, instead of several weeks, like most butterflies species.
Because they are so dependent on flowers, they are subsequently better pollinators than most butterflies.
Also, because they live so much longer than most butterflies, they tend to become much more tattered before they die.
