A pun my word

By Ericsamson
Observed on a walk from Paignton to Brixham last Thursday. After about 20 months of carrying out audits on unicorn numbers in Sherwood Forest Matron and I finally made our bid for freedom, loaded the wagon with provisions and headed off to Paignton for a week. We spotted this beach hut at Broadsands - roughly the half way point of the walk - and the legend above the door struck as me as being a groaningly decent pun as well as a sublime bit of silliness. Not being a classics scholar (unlike 'The Dear Leader') I have always assumed that the Latin phrase 'carpe diem' means 'Fish of the Day'. I am therefore very grateful to a Mrs Trellis of North Wales for pointing out my error.

We returned on Friday leaving Paignton at 11.50am and arriving home at 8.30pm (The sat nav initially suggested a journey time of about four and half hours but had reckoned without the M5 being reassigned from motorway to 'slow processional route.') On arrival at Samson Towers we discovered that a well known builders merchants had left about 35 2 metre decking boards by the front door which should have been delivered several doors away. Our profound sense of joy was further enhanced by the discovery that a leak in the bathroom (entirely undetected on departure) had manifested itself in our brief absence and, aided an abetted by gravity, had made its way down into the kitchen turning the cooker hob into a small water feature and causing a fair bit of damage to several of the cabinet carcasses.

Thanks to the kind, and very reasonably priced, ministrations of a very good emergency plumber the leak was stopped yesterday and the process of mopping up and drying out has left us feeling a little 'wrung out'. (See what I did there? Yes, of course you did and are rightly unimpressed.) Tomorrow promises a multitude of joys; phone calls to insurers, repairers and the prospect of another half hour of being pummelled by the physioterrorist (I am grateful to Dave 'mistere' for that splendid coinage!)

Will endeavour to catch up with today's voting tomorrow as there is a wee bit more tidying up to do although it all seems to be drying out more quickly than we dared to hope. It could have been vastly worse so I think we chalk this up as one of life's fortunate moments!!! 🥳 🤣

Best wishes to all - Graham. 😀

Dear Mr Graham,

How pleased I am to learn that Matron and yourself have managed to carp your jolly old diem right and proper. Less pleasing to learn that a well known builders merchants has tried to carp somebody else's diem at your inconvenience . . .

How fortunate after all vicissitudes that Mrs Trellis of North Wales was in a position to assist you with her Polyglot Genius' Instant Pocket Dictionary so that you are no longer under any misapprehension. Misapprehension is not the ideal thing to be under, after all. I am sure Samantha will second me in my assurance.

With very best wishes
Sir Nigel de Molesworth.

Marge still being painted, oh how she wriggles, but then at sixty feet there's a lot to wriggle!
Stern gear problems being rectified, I tried Anusol but to no avail although Marge did smile a little as I inserted the propshaft where the Sun only infrequently shines.
A forty mile daily round trip to the yard ( boat, not Scotland) and a deadline to vacate leaves little time for drivel and no time for owt else so, alas all I can do is pop in here over a quick breakfast.Sad

Hope you and Matron are well, and if you have more floods I may soon be able to come to your assistance in a shiny boat!

A well nackered Bertie. Smile

So sorry to hear that your carp got away - fishing can be such a pointless and frustrating pastime, and serves only to give male ears a well-deserved rest from the irritating noises produced by female mouths.

The last time I had plumbing problems, I was sent to the local hospital for closer inspection, so the British way of doing things, having a competent man pop in seems far more convenient. Just do not ask me what they did with the plunger!

I trust you left Paignton as you found it. There has been no mention of any untowardness on the national news, so presume you managed to either behave yourself, or that you had remembered to pack your cloak of invisibility for the trip.

Who can blame them for their hut name - I always think of the late Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society.
