A Walk around Belfast

By cats_123
Finally managed to get out and about....had a couple of hours to wander at random around Belfast city centre, so over the next few days I'll take you on a little walk Grin

The weather was bright and cold but with bright sunshine creating lots of sharp angles and shadows..perfect GrinGrin

Quote:The Big Fish is a printed ceramic mosaic sculpture by John Kindness 10 metres long constructed in 1999 in Donegall Quay in Belfast, near the Lagan Lookout and Custom House.

Quote:The outer skin of the fish is a cladding of ceramic tiles decorated with texts and images relating to the history of Belfast. Material from Tudor times to present day newspaper headlines are included along with contributions from Belfast school children (including a soldier and an Ulster Fry). The Ulster Museum provided the primary source of historic images, while local schools/day centres located along the line of the River Farset were approached to provide drawings for the fish. Images were provided by Glenwood Primary School, St Comgalls and Everton Day Centres.

The Big Fish also contains a time capsule storing information/images/poetry on the City.

This is quite the attractive sculpture. I will be making a brief visit to Belfast in June, and I hope to see some of these sights. We'll be on a tour, so I hope the driver will have an interest in some of the artistic areas.

Belfast is quite walkable, so hope you get time to spend a few hours seeing the landmarks SmileSmile

The yellow gantry really draws the eye. I guess this was intentional, it does make an interesting juxtaposition with the sculpture.
