Aberystwyth Signal

By VictoriaAnn
After a flat morning the sun started to come through but I felt the colour version of this lacked impact. I wanted a feeling of emptiness and waiting, not sure this achieves this but I like it anyway Smile

I think you have largely achieved your aim, I have just push it a little further.

Hello again!

As with your previous Critique Gallery upload, could you add the colour original please as a modification? I appreciate your intentions, for a more subtle, understated look, but the problem here that I see is that the result doesn't really distinguish between land, sea and sky because of the tonal similarities. This also gives less sense of depth, distance.

A minor point in terms of processing but important - there is a definite tilt to the sea horizon.

I love the subject, and unusually this I think is one where central placement works. It gives a bleakly defiant look.

I'll come back later.

Ill add the colur one, it was very difficult to level it as the see/land in the background wasnt clear so i worked on the bricks at the front.

If you lie it, that iall that matters. It has some impact, although the mono tones are rather in the middle of the range resuting in a slight flat feel. The content is not my kind of thing, but that is subjective.

Removed the tilt in a couple of mods; increased exposure in the foreground.

Your mono looks a lot better than the original colour.

I think Ivor (capto) has got pretty close with the more hyped treatment in his mod. I wonder about a tighter crop, as well - there's dead space on the left, and maybe also a bit on the right... Without losing the symmetry, a crop is possible - and there are assymmetric possibilities, too.

Thanks for adding the original. I've added a couple of mods now.

Re straightening: The sea needs to be level, regarding the foreground I suspect that the plinth isn't actually level in real life! I rotated for the sea horizon, but then skewed bottom right down a bit which improved the plinth.

Then a bit of added light and some dodging on the foreground.

I worked b&w in Nik Silver Efex Pro, with a bit added on the contrast and structure sliders, some work on the colour channels particularly yellow and cyan, and a hint of burn edges for a broody feel. I hope I haven't pushed that too far, but I rather like the result.
Regards,
Moira

Moira beat me to it on the mods...

And you have a problem with the beacon, I think - it seems to be slightly askew. These things sometimes happen - though the appropriately-named Skew tool in Photoshop and Elements will let you shear the top of the frame sideways to correct it.

Or it may just be my eyes.

Great shot and I love the way the sky adds to the drama of the image.

The mod is only my ideas as I feel the letterbox crop adds to the picture.

Thanks all, will take all the comments on board. Guess I need to trust myself a bit more Smile
